Emergency Department users can now make online appointments with local GPs

People attending the Emergency Department at the Broken Hill Hospital can now use an iPad to look for a local GP appointment during extended waiting times or to book follow up appointments after treatment.

The Far West Local Health District has placed an iPad in the Broken Hill Health Service Emergency Department waiting room to make it easier for people to make online appointments with local GPs.

“Having the iPad available will assist community members seeking treatment in the Emergency Department and Fast Track Clinic in a number of ways,” said Ms Denise McCallum, Project Manager Integrated Care at Far West LHD.

The iPad will assist people:

  • To seek treatment from a local GP if there is extended waiting times at the Emergency Department or Fast Track Clinic.
  • To make online follow up appointments with a local GP after they have received treatment in the Emergency Department or Fast Track Clinic.
  • The iPad can be used anytime of the night or day to make an appointment or see if there are any GP appointments free.

The IPad will be situated on a floor mounted frame in the Emergency Department waiting room with easy to follow steps to help people make an online GP appointment.

Currently three GP practices in Broken Hill offer online appointments and can be accessed by the iPad.  They are Nachiappans, Broken Hill GP Super Clinic and the South Medical Centre.

“The iPad will also give people the chance to complete a patient experience survey to tell us about their experience in Emergency Department and Fast Track Clinic, what we did well and where we could improve,” said Ms McCallum.

People will also be able to access RHUBI online which provides up to date information about health services and programs in our community. The clinic calendar will provide information on the dates, times and contact numbers for clinics being run across the far west.
