Free Cancer Survivorship Program

Nutrition and physical activity program helps cancer survivors maintain a healthy lifestyle: new research

Cancer survivors in Broken Hill and outlying communities are encouraged to participate in Cancer Council NSW’s ENRICHing Survivorship program

Cancer Council NSW and Far West Local Health District (FWLHD) are bringing the FREE ENRICHing Survivorship program to Broken Hill. The program will commence on the 17th March.

ENRICHing Survivorship is a free group-based program comprised of eight, two-hour, face to face weekly sessions. The program introduces survivors and their carers to a range of nutrition information, involvement in physical activity and practical information and discussion about adjusting to life following cancer treatment.

Fiona Markwick, Community Programs Coordinator for Cancer Council NSW said “physical activity and a healthy weight have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence, and improve the psychosocial health of cancer survivors”

Fiona said “Healthy lifestyle sessions are co-facilitated by an exercise specialist and dietitian. Sessions contain a mix of resistance and cardiovascular exercise as well as healthy eating knowledge and skill development. The program also includes a yoga and mindfulness session, taught by a qualified tutor, and a peer support session, led by volunteers, which provides practical information and support relating to the emotional impacts of cancer.

Sandra Turley, FWLHD Cancer Care Coordinator position said “We encourage cancer survivors and their carers to join the FREE ENRICHing Survivorship program to help them move towards, and maintain, a healthier lifestyle which will inevitably reduce their risk of cancer recurrence, and improve overall survival.”

“A healthy diet and physical activity have been shown to enhance the physical and psychosocial health of cancer survivors, reduce their risk of cancer recurrence and improve overall survival,” she said.
