NATIONAL PALLIATIVE CARE WEEK
21-28 May 2017
National Palliative Care week is 21-28 May, and the theme is ‘You matter, your care matters. Palliative care can make a difference’.
For National Palliative Care Week, Far West Palliative Care Service will be hosting a morning tea at Maari Ma Aboriginal Health Service in Broken Hill on Tuesday 23rd May to acknowledge the effective partnership between local palliative care services and Maari Ma in supporting Aboriginal palliative care patients and their families.
The event will provide an opportunity for the two services to talk about palliative care, and how awareness can be raised about how palliative care can make a difference in the lives of people who are facing a life limiting illness.
Palliative Care staff will be available between 9am-10.30am to answer any questions Maari Ma clients, families and staff may have about palliative care.
Palliative Care Services are provided across the Far West Local Health District by Specialist Palliative Care Services in Broken Hill and Dareton in collaboration with Primary Health Care Partners.
Ms Melissa Cumming, Director Cancer & Palliative Care Services for the Far West LHD said: “Our Palliative Care Services work in partnership with GPs, other medical and nursing services, Primary Health Care, Aboriginal Health Services, Aged Care and Allied Health and other health partners to ensure that patients and families who require palliative care can access services wherever they choose to receive care”.
“Many people think that Palliative Care is just for people with an advanced cancer diagnosis. People with any life limiting illness can benefit from good palliative care, including but not limited to end-stage renal, cardiac, respiratory and neurological conditions”.
Palliative Care aims to support people and their carers who are dealing with a life limiting illness by helping to address their physical, emotional, cultural and psycho-social needs. Good palliative care can enhance the quality of life of patients with a palliative care diagnosis.
